Play Golf. You’ll Be Back!

I didn’t grow up with golf nor did our high school have a golf club. I’m as far from knowing about golf as a lost ball can be in the sand trap. But that’s going to change!

“Come out and have fun and enjoy yourself,” said Marcia Bloodworth at the Wallace Adams Golf Course Pro Shop when I called to ask about golf options. “You’ll fall in love with the game and start keeping score.”

Wallace Adams Golf Course at Little Ocmulgee State Park & Lodge has just been named a Top 25 Public Golf Course in Georgia. The course came in at No. 16. Rankings are based on GolfPass golfer reviews accumulated throughout the year. See them all.

Looking through the information online, I found an amazing special overnight golf package. It’s called Fly in, Stay and Play.

To make the weekend even more thrilling, my friends and I could charter a flight to Telfair-Wheeler Airport (MQW) and staff from the lodge can pick us up and deliver us just down the road to Little Ocmulgee State Park Lodge to stay overnight in the lodge. Plus, we would get a discounted rate on golf for two at the Wallace Adams Golf Course.

I imagine myself on the 18-hole championship course and a warm feeling of being outdoors, with friends, comes over me. The Wallace Adams course is often described as friendly. When you read about it or hear others describe it, golfers love how the natural design does not exclude any playing style and is suitable for golfers of all ages and abilities. While most players opt for getting around the course in a cart, walking is permitted year-round.

Golfing here is affordable and worry-free from distractions. The challenge was described to me as a setting where players can take on a fair course without hidden water hazards and secret sand traps.

When I called the Pro Shop to start planning a summer holiday with family, Marcia encouraged me to make a tee time – which you can also do online. The reservation comes straight to the Pro Shop desk. As we come into early summer, it’s possible that walk-ins may have to wait or come back as the course begins to get busy.

“Half of the players come every year and locals come every week,” said Bloodworth. “They’re coming with a group of buddies and having a good time, drinking some beer and doing all the fun golf stuff.”

The full-service Pro Shop offers golf accessories including club rentals, beautiful shirts, commemorative caps and balls, along with a snack and beverage bar.

Surrounded by sand hills and the iconic pines of South Georgia, Little Ocmulgee State Park & Lodge is a truly memorable destination just outside of McRae-Helena, Georgia – a cool, small downtown with shopping and dining options.

This summer, you can expect to see guests golfing, hiking, swimming in the private pool, gathering with friends and family in a picnic shelter and enjoying the 265-acre Little Ocmulgee Lake through swimming, boating and fishing.

See? It’s not all about golf. But Marcia Bloodworth wants everyone to explore the course.

“Just give it a try! I promise you after that one game, you’ll come back. It’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been,” she said.

Little Ocmulgee State Park is a tranquil 1,360-acre Georgia State Park on the Little Ocmulgee River. Reserve coziness with 60 Lodge guest rooms, 10 brand-new cottages, and a campground with 54 sites for tent and RV camping.
